The Birth of SASMIRA

The Synthetic & Art Silk Mills’ Research Association (SASMIRA) was established as a cooperative research institute, receiving recognition from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. Founded to drive innovation in the man-made textile industry, SASMIRA was envisioned as a hub for scientific research, technical advancements, and industry development.

Important Landmark

A Landmark for Textile Innovation

By 1958, SASMIRA had firmly established itself as a pioneering research institution. This year marked the completion of its iconic headquarters in Mumbai—an imposing marble structure spread across 12,000 sq. meters at the foot of Worli Hill, solidifying its position as a key center for textile research and innovation.

1975

A New Wave

Revolutionizing Textile Testing

SASMIRA’s contributions to import substitution and technological innovation gained national recognition. The institute was honored by the Government of India for its development of testing instruments like the Perspirometer (1969) and Stiffness Tester (1975). These achievements reinforced SASMIRA’s role in reducing dependency on foreign technology.

2000

A Mature Organization

Golden Jubilee Celebration

Stepping into the new millennium, SASMIRA expanded beyond research into technical textiles and industrial applications. Recognized as a nodal center for Geotextiles, Agro-textiles, and Medical textiles, the institute played a vital role in integrating advanced textile solutions across various industries, enhancing both innovation and sustainability.

As SASMIRA enters its 75th year, the Amrit Mahotsav celebration (January 2025 - January 2026) will commemorate seven decades of innovation, education, and industry leadership.
